Michelle's book is definitely targeted towards the "younger" reader, maybe someone in the age range of about 15-25, or someone who is just beginning to become interested in beauty and style. Make Up gives a brief overview of almost every category a girl might be interested in, from skin care to dress codes to DIY manicures to achieving the career you want. If you are the kind of person who reads beauty/style magazines, frequents Sephora or some other beauty megastore, browses style-watch blogs, etc - then most of what Michelle writes in the skin care, hair care, make up, and style sections is not going to present a lot of new information. Still, I think there's enough content and advice to each section that there's likely a few new things in here for most people, and this book is not out to be an in-depth guide.

The sections on skin care routine, make-up basics, hair & nail (& hand & foot & lips) care, fashion, and digital life were all fun & fast to read. Each left me with a few new ideas to implement, or at least reminded me of things I keep meaning to do (like I should be wearing vaseline on my eyelashes at every night and on my feet overnight once a week). The only section that didn't hold much appeal for me was the advice on job hunting and internships, but that's because it's clearly targeted towards people who are just beginning to apply for jobs without much experience in their chosen field, and I don't fall into that category. Even so, there's still worthwhile advice in this chapter, especially her work rules for everyone. On the other hand, the chapter on entrepreneurship gives really solid tips for how to succeed if you choose to start your own business. Overall, Make Up is a fun read that gives smart suggestions on virtually everything a girl might want/need to know.

Michelle has done a fantastic job with her book! I loved it to pieces and it makes a lovely addition to my bookshelf. If you're a fan of Michelle or looking for some tips in make-up, independent entrepreneurship and just some encouragement to get up and follow your dreams, Michelle manages to do just that within the pages of a very nicely bound book. I love how it was organized and the information was both interesting and new/familiar in some sections.
I love Michelle Phan, I watch her videos from the very beginning when she was using a crappy camera. I was able to grow with her and see how make up changed her life. I learned how to put on make up from her and her book is beautiful and thoughtful to the reader. I love it.
Make-up and personal care tips and help, personal details of how she got where she is and turned a hobby of something she loved into a business and some tips for job interviews, resumes, etiquette things like that.

I'd recommend this book to young teenagers who are really into make-up. It's pretty and well thought out and put together. I always appreciate it when books like this also delve into holding onto you're integrity and reputation. She does touch on the fact that as much fun as make-up it's real confidence and personality that makes the make-up pop.

All in all a good read, a good gift idea but pretty generic stuff.
this book is very inspirational it is a great read and makes you feel great and is empowering but you can get very good makeup advice free from youtube that is much more in depth than this book but with that said I highly recommend reading it. it's one of the best books I have read in a decade
I love Michelle Phan. She's the first beauty guru I've ever watched and I'm so glad to see her success as she did. She's nice at teaching others at how to look and act fancy without stop being who we are. This is a must read for the girly girl, professional makeup artists, and beginners.
I adore this woman so to be honest, I would've purchased this book no matter the reviews! Admittedly, my teenage daughters are more fascinated by the content of this book than I am. It's certainly no "Kevin-Aucoin-esque" advanced makeup technique guide --- but then again, it doesn't claim to be. Michelle Phan as a human being is a massive contribution to the human race and this book gives you a well-rounded look at who she is as a person and what she represents. Overall, I think her message to women and girls is super positive and find her to be a beautiful and authentic person who just oozes with love and light. I would definitely gift this book to any of the younger women in my life! xo
Bought 2 copies for my best friends' high school graduation and I'm now considering buying one for myself. One of my friend's mom actually flipped through the book and really loved my gift idea. She even advised my friend's sister to read through it.

Michelle gives advice from social life to using the computer, beauty, and career. In the first part of the book, she includes a bit of her background/biography. If you haven't checked out Michelle Phan's youtube channel, you're missing out. She gives a lot of honest life advice in addition to being a beauty guru. She is also an entrepreneur and has her own beauty brand.

The book is also very nicely designed, with colored pages and quality material for each page. Even time I looked at the book before wrapping it to give it to my friend, I was a wee bit envious....so buying a copy for myself is in the near future!
As another reviewer pointed out, it seems this book is best suited for the 15-21 year olds. I myself was disappointed- I didn't find anything in this book that I didn't already know. Maybe I needed to read the description a bit better, but when I saw "MAKE UP" in the title, I assumed this would be most of the content in the book. But there's info on how to dress, how to go prepare for a job interview..Very,very basic stuff. There's even a line from the book that says something like, 'The barrel of the curling iron is the part that heats up and curls the hair.' What female doesn't already know that?? Again, the younger females may appreciate this, but this was info that I don't need. So for me, this was a waste of money.
