The new Jeffery Deaver standalone is a thriller, not a procedural. And we're in Wisconsin, not New York. And we're in the woods, not in the city. And the protagonist is a woman. And the antagonists are . . . anybody's guess. A rural deputy answers a 911 call, finds murder and mayhem in a home in the woods, escapes (barely) with one of the putative victims and is then chased across a state park replete with water traps, briars and brambles, rock cliffs, and, yes, a meth lab.Since this is Jeffery Deaver, the plot seems to be proceeding (at breakneck speed) from point A to point B, but, of course, there are twists/turns X, Y, and Z before we get to B. The setting could have been claustrophobic, but it is not. The characters are engaging, the setting is nicely realized, but some of the action is a tad implausible and sometimes things work out a little too conveniently (or potential problems are anticipated a little too cleverly). Nevertheless, the story is strong, the action insistent, the conclusion satisfying. If you're up for a trip to the woods, with potential bad guys galore and putative good guys perhaps not quite what they seem, go for it.

The Bodies Left Behind A Novel Jeffery Deaver 9781416595618 Books Reviews
There is almost nothing better than a good book by Jeffrey Deaver, this book had everything with lots of twists and turns and trusting the wrong people. It was a book that was very hard to put down.If you like murder mysteries this is a great one.
I really enjoyed this story, it was exciting and kept on track, from start to finish. There were a few twists and turns that were unexpected but fit into the story and it had an interesting finish.
The last book that I liked as much as this one was a book by Dean Koontz titled, "Intensity" Great book!
Very, very good, with some surprising twists and a really frightening chase. The lead character is a pretty lucky gal but she does not totally win out in the end, and in that respect, she was realistic. This is my first introduction to Deaver but it will not be my last book by him. I liked the open-ended conclusion and the relationships among the characters, including some ancillary ones who turn out to be not exactly who they seemed. Scary and compelling.
When Deputy Brynn McKenzie answers a 911 call at a remote house near Lake Mondac in northern Wisconsin, she finds a double homicide. She is also confronted with the murderers who are still there, and along with a Michelle, a house guest who manages to elude the killers, she finds herself in a race for survival.
Deaver fans know what to expect. He/she will experience dozens of twists and turns and nothing is as it seems. Deaver will backtrack toward the end, explaining most of his seemingly unrealistic twists. Why, for instance, does a smart man like Hart take a job working with a loser like Lewis? Why does Michelle lose her cool completely in the middle of nowhere, letting the killers know where they are?
As an extra added ingredient Deaver includes the obvious attraction between Brynn and Hart. There's a scene where they talk about why Hart does what he does, and, although he's got all the cards, she tries to arrest him on the spot. He can't help but respect her audacity. Brynn also appears to be a two-time loser, whose husband is having an affair, which adds to the tension.
THE BODIES LEFT BEHIND is nowhere near as good as the Lincoln Rhyme series, but it will appeal to thriller lovers who aren't bothered by the unrealistic twists, some of which remain unbelievable all the way to the last page. The ending will also frustrate some readers. Deaver seemed unable to come up with a suitable demise for such a worthy adversary as Hart. I was almost as surprised to see how easily the smart, one-step-ahead-of-everybody-else villain met his end as I was when the Llewelyn Moss went down with a wimper in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.
5+ Stars Excellent!
Short review read it.
Jeffery Deaver has written another compelling stand-alone that is easy to follow a difficult to put down. Some violence, no drag-you-down drama.
Intriguing storyline that keeps the reader guessing. Believable characters with distinct personalities and chameleon abilities.
Thought-provoking, interesting and realistic dialogue.
“None they heard of. But my father always said those that threaten usually don’t do. Those that do usually don’t threaten.”
I may re-read this story and always look forward to works by this author.
What a disappointment. Having read the author's earlier books I had high expectations and it started out suspenseful, but then it gets bogged down in one narrow escape after another, a seemingly endless series of climaxes that never climax. It seems as if he is trying to imitate the superb works of John Sandford in rural Minnesota, changing the scene to rural Wisconsin, but unable to make the reader believe any of this is possible. Imagine two women running for their lives and they stop to discuss their marital problems. Yuk. This seems to be part of a general trend that popular authors are writing crap knowing their fans will buy whatever they write and the editors (this one needs one) unable to tell them the work doesn't work. (ditto Patterson, Cornwell, Woods). The book is at least 30 percent too long and after what seems to be a climax, it goes on and on in a less suspenseful epilogue. I got really antsy and couldn't wait for it to finish.
I cannot believe this was written by Jeffrey Deaver, the same man who wrote the Lincoln Rhyme series and my favorite book of all time "A Maidens Grave". This was a huge disappointment! I did make it through this boring read, with its cardboard characters and predictable plot. I just had to force myself, it was horrible I'm sorry, Jeffrey blah! The master of plot twists really bombed here.
