Indigo Beverly Jenkins Books
Indigo was such a delightful read! I wasn't quite sure what to expect from a Romance set on the Underground Railroad, but I ended up really enjoying it! Hester is the owner of one of the houses in her communities line of the Railroad. One night she's brought a family and a gravely injured man, who turns out to be the Black Daniel. The Daniel goes around and takes slaves from their owners and brings them to freedom, but clearly something went wrong this time. Hester nurses him back to health despite his disagreeable personality, but once he's on the mend, the two start getting close. The author does an amazing job of using a terrible time in this country's history for the backdrop of the story. She doesn't shy away from the tough realities, but she also displays a lot of hope and happiness. Indigo shows us that it wasn't all gloom and doom. Yes, Hester was a slave and her hands will always mark her as so, but she's living her life. She's supporting herself and helping those in need. She's not bitter and angry (unless the situation calls for it), but she's also not a doormat. She's a woman who knows her mind and how to use it. Even when things seem to be going to hell in her community, Hester holds her head high and doesn't stop doing what she knows is right.
In addition to the Romance, Indigo also has a great mystery type plot. When Galen is well enough, he explains to Hester what happened to him and that he knows there's a traitor in her town. Obviously, Hester doesn't want to believe that about her neighbors, but something had to have gone wrong for Galen to have been beaten so badly. This plot thread is dropped for awhile in the middle as the Romance grows, but then it picks up again and I was shocked! The things people will do for love and money!
Indigo was really great. I had never read anything set in this time and place before, so I did learn quite a bit from it. The Romance was sweet and steamy, just how I like it! I also loved how Galen helps Hester have more fun in her life. She takes things entirely too seriously and is resigned to a quiet, passionless life before she meets him. The ending isn't all sunshine and rainbows. Of course, there's a happy ending for our couple, but we're also left with this sense that more needs to be done before everyone gets their happy ending.

Indigo Beverly Jenkins Books Reviews
This was the first book by Beverly Jenkins that I read. That was a year ago, and I've since read her entire historical romance catalogue and am eagerly waiting for the release of her latest one scheduled for later this month. Before reading Indigo (and Jenkins' other books), I couldn't imagine how one could write a "standard genre romance" story with its requisite steaminess/banter/happy ending about black folks in the U.S. set between the 1700's and the Reconstruction that wouldn't in some way either trivialize or romanticize the trauma of slavery, Jim Crow, and white supremacy. Yet Jenkins' work is a master class in seamlessly weaving in the historically accurate narratives of dignity, resistance, survival, and heroism lived by folks of color throughout U.S. history within engaging, funny, and passionate stories of love and romance. Indigo in particular brings to life both the dangers and heroic feats of the Underground Railroad conductors (both real and fictional) while showing us that, like all people, they too fell in love and had passionate sex. I am so impressed with the depth of research that went into developing this story, and all of Jenkins' historical novels! I certainly hadn't expected to walk away with an expanded knowledge of African American history when I picked up this "romance" novel!!
This was surprisingly good to read. It's been a long time since I sat down with an historical romance and this book reminded me of why I love the genre; great dialogue, compelling characters, easily resolved conflict.
The author didn't bore us with the more trite romance trope of miscommunication and the leading female character was not flighty, a harridan, or weak. On top of it all, there is some historical context included that enhances the characters and the plot.
There are a couple of complaints. The copy editing is poor. I found numerous typos. Not much historical research went into this other than knowledge of the Underground Railroad and the players and events leading up to the Civil War.
All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend.
I have been hearing about Beverly Jenkins for years.
When Indigo was selected as our book club selection I didn't know what to expect. Historical romance didn't sound appealing.
I was drawn in from the epilogue. It actually pissed me off that a person would do something so stupid in the name of love.
Indigo is the love story of Hester Wyatt, a conductor on the Underground Railroad and Galen Vachon, a wealthy Frenchman with a secret.
The book explores slavery, racism, and the abolitionist movement. You are given a history lesson while rooting for these two to get together. I could not put this book down. I laughed, cried and talked back to the characters. I also enjoyed the strong female character. Hester wasn't a damsel in distress. Jenkins has such an eloquent way with words. You often forget that you are reading a historical romance because love is a universal theme that transcends time periods. After reading Indigo I am now a fan and will definitively be reading more of her work. I regret that it took me so long to discover what the hype was all about.
